Assisted Living & Nursing Homes

*Nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities, and assisted living facilities, (collectively known as long-term care facilities, LTCFs) provide a variety of services, both medical and personal care, to people who are unable to manage independently in the community. Over 4 million Americans are admitted to or reside in nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities each year and nearly one million persons reside in assisted living facilities. Data about infections in LTCFs are limited, but it has been estimated in the medical literature that:

  • 1 to 3 million serious infections occur every year in these facilities.
  • Infections include urinary tract infection, diarrheal diseases, antibiotic-resistant staph infections and many others.
  • Infections are a major cause of hospitalization and death; as many as 380,000 people die of the infections in LTCFs every year.

Hospitals & Emergency Rooms

*HAIs annually cause nearly 100,000 deaths and cost the health care system nearly $6.5 billion, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While standard IC&P programs can help to reduce the incidence of HAIs, many health systems are not maximizing the full potential of their IC&P teams. Led, ideally, by infectious disease physicians who have the requisite training and expertise, IC&P teams can provide guidance in a wide variety of tasks — from consulting on equipment purchases to preparing emergency departments for outbreaks — to avoid or reduce devastating and costly infection-related problems.

Clinics & Urgent Care

Procedures performed in outpatient settings are often invasive and carry risks of infection. Many of these procedures were previously performed in hospitals in which infection control practices are subject to regular oversight and regulation. Despite the increase in ambulatory care, there has not been a corresponding increase in infection control oversight in outpatient settings, and data are insufficient on the rates of infections resulting from procedures performed in outpatient settings

Daycare & Kindercare

Children cared for at daycare or in preschool education can exhibit a two to three times greater risk of acquiring infections, which can impact their individual health and help spread a diseases through the community. Among other factors, the risk is associated with the characteristics of daycare centers, and simple preventative measures may be effective for reducing some transmission of diseases but not all and some viruses are airborne and this is harder to control.
